Scores of travel and tourism professionals from all over the world are now in Grenada to attend the 3rd Executive Symposium for Innovators in Coastal Tourism. From Costa Rica to Puerto Rico, Jamaica to Miami, they all came to the Spice of the Caribbean to learn as much as they can about sustainable tourism and to experience Pure Grenada.
As a catalyst for this initiative, the new ‘Pure Grenada’ brand has propelled Grenada forward in sustainable tourism. Home to several low impact, environmentally friendly resorts, marine protected areas and a people with a simple lifestyle, the island is slowly becoming an emerging success story as a sustainable tourism destination.
The symposium began with a study tour where participants traveled up the east coast to visit the secluded but much talked about La Sagesse area. While there, the group interacted with the manager of the La Sagesse Hotel, Restaurant and Bar; Jerry Rappaport who gave a synopsis of the sustainable practices utilized by the property along with the challenges faced and the way forward.
Another stop along the way was the Belmont Estate; arguably referred to as the Caribbean’s finest argri-tourism experience. From sampling Grenada’s organic dark chocolate to learning the natural methods used to create it, participants surely got a treat. This led to everyone having a local meal served from cast iron pots on a live fire, after which they experienced an exhibit of art and craft by Grenadian craftsmen.
That evening brought with it an elegant opening ceremony at the Grenadian by Rex Resorts. The evening began with remarks by Grenada’s Prime Minister; Dr. the Right Hon. Keith Mitchell and Tourism & Civil Aviation Minister; Alexandra Otway Noel among other officials. To top it all off, one of Grenada’s up and coming bands; Sabrina and the Navigators sang the ‘Pure Grenada’ theme song to set the tone for the night and reinforcing the authentic nature of the island.
The following days of the symposium will see workshops in Best Practices for Coastal & Island Tourism, Green Finance for Sustainable Tourism and more followed by a beach party and networking event’ indicating that Grenada is the ideal backdrop for any conference or business meeting.
