Grenada’s display during last year’s Chelsea Flower Show won a 9th highly prized Gold medal. This year, designer Suzanne Gaywood hopes for a 10th, and is featured along with the Grenada Chelsea team on the RHS Chelsea website. To view just copy this into your browser: http://bit.ly/z12iPV. The video promotes Grenada specifically to those that are interested in flora and fauna. The inclusion of the Grenada video on this RHS website, which receives up 747,000 hits monthly, is a direct result of the collective efforts of the Grenada Board of Tourism, in St. George’s and the United Kingdom.

Additionally, work in context of this annual event within the valuable UK market to promote Grenada continues in collaboration with partner British Airways. From April 18 to June 18, 2012 several joint promotional activities will take place. They include a media and travel trade event to promote Grenada at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and an online banner campaign that will enable British consumers to click through to the booking pages of Grenada’s hotels on the British Airways website. Further, 275,000 avid garden enthusiasts will receive an exclusive Grenada destination featured E-newsletter that will be circulated on May 22, 2012, the date that medal winners are announced. Moreover, a full-page colour advertisement within 100,000 copies of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Guide is part of the initiatives being adopted to give Grenada the prominence that this high-profile contest attracts.

Crowning it all is a competition for two lucky members of the RHS to win a 7 night trip to Grenada, courtesy of British Airways, Blue Horizon Garden Resort and Mount Cinnamon Beach Resort.

The Grenada Board of Tourism in London remains committed to collaborating with prominent industry partners there to promote and showcase Grenada as a preferred Caribbean destination that is home to a range of floral species that have captured the judges’ hearts in previous shows.

St. Georges, Grenada – After 10 years organizing the largest International Air Rallies in North America, the organizing committee Aviation Connection is this year extending its network of destinations to Latin America and the Caribbean. For the first time therefore, Grenada is pleased to have accepted an invitation to host one of the legs of this unique aviation event, where a 51-member team of pilots and journalists on 19 single, twin and turbine type aircraft from various continents will arrive at the Maurice Bishop International Airport on Wednesday April 18, 2012 for a 2 day visit.

This friendly initiative across the Caribbean by participants is aimed at increasing awareness about the rules and regulations of visited countries, and familiarizing the pilots with the local procedures while being confronted with various situations. It will also increase their confidence and capacity to travel beyond their present boundaries to the benefit of visited destinations. Established in 1953 by Canadian Governor the Right Honourable Vincent Massey, it is considered a noble way to acknowledge the important role that aviation played in the development of Canada.

The Grenada visit of this distinguished group is being coordinated by the Grenada Board of Tourism in collaboration with several local partners and stakeholders. The intention, as requested by the organizers, is to showcase the best of Grenada, so that the spin-off coverage on TVA-SPORTS in Canada will allow its “AIR Programme” audience to savour “the beautiful and friendly island of Spice to share great moments with its people, learn about the history and culture and simply celebrate together”. In this context, areas earmarked for them to visit include the Dinner Theatre at the Spice Basket, the River Antoine Rum Distillery; Belmont Estate, where they will actively participate in a Cocoa Dancing Competition, followed by a visit to the Grand Etang National Park.

Apart from Grenada, this year’s Governor General’s Cup Caribbean Air Challenge event is being hosted by the Turks and Caicos Islands, Martinique, and Anguilla. The professionalism associated with each event and the quality and quantity of support received from aviation partners over the years have positioned this event as one of the most important international events in its category.

The Grenada Board of Tourism views this inclusion of Grenada in this rally as one that will generate enormous promotional value for the destination and greater awareness among pilots globally about key elements of Grenada’s tourism product.

Readers of the on-line publication MSNBC.com, who are passionate about traveling, photography and desirous of learning more about the location of both new and tried destinations, are being told that Grenada is one of five (5) Caribbean islands that they ought to discover now. In its most recent publication, targeting those who are “ready to expand their horizons, by charting a new path to paradise, and lesser known gems”, the story describes Grenada as ‘best for just anyone’. It goes on to highlight Grenada’s tropical favour and its range of mountains, beaches and laid-back character. It speaks as well, of Grenada’s affordable accommodation facilities and bucolic villages that await exploration.

Other Caribbean islands mentioned as having a similar appeal to escape to at present are Curacao, Dominica, Montserrat, and St. Kitts.

Director of Tourism Simon Stiell remarked that “this selection of Grenada among lesser known gems that are ready for exploration by the discerning traveler, speaks highly about ongoing efforts to establish and promote Grenada as an unspoilt Caribbean destination, with a range of opportunities that nature lovers and eco-tourism enthusiasts can enjoy”.

In recent months Grenada has been receiving an unprecedented level of publicity in both traditional and online media, as travel writers and bloggers boldly share their Grenada experiences. It is the intention of the Grenada Board of Tourism to increase the number of invitations to travel writers to visit the island so that this level of publicity can continue.

Work by the Grenada Board of Tourism within the valuable UK market, which enjoyed a 4% growth in 2011, has started very strongly for 2012. Efforts there are geared towards building awareness among the consumer and trade components, as well as stimulating interest in Grenada by introducing relevant aspects of the destination’s product.

So far for 2012, within the UK market, Grenada has gotten remarkable exposure among millions of readers and viewers. Travel expert Sarah Woods, was featured on the leading UK daytime television programme ‘The Alan Titchmarsh Show’, recommending Grenada to British nationals. Alan Titchmarsh himself, who presents the BBC programmes from the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, also indicated publicly, during the programme, that he too has visited Grenada and loved it immensely.

Four (4) national newspapers carried features highlighting Grenada’s varied attractions and its range of hotels and entertainment options. Particular mention was made of the innovative Sleep Retreat at La Source Resort. In addition, an interactive promotion was established with the daily London Evening Standard where readers are invited to post a photo of their ‘most romantic holiday memory’ on an online gallery to enter a competition to win a prize trip to Grenada. Apart from the newspaper, every vendor bill across the city of London carried the invitation. It was also emailed to 145,000 subscribers of the weekly publication.

The Grenada Board of Tourism in London continues to work with partner stakeholders including hotels, airlines and attractions to position Grenada as the preferred Caribbean destination.

At a media conference last Monday January 23, 2012, disclosure came of plans by world renowned developer and investor of the Port Louis project Mr. Peter De Savary to collaborate with local contractor Dr. Anslem La Touche to construct a sixty-five million US dollar tourism project in St. George’s, on the former site of the Islander Hotel. It involves the rebuilding of the said hotel and the construction of a number of state of the art luxury villas and suites with swimming pools overlooking the sea.

Speaking of the design, for the 5,000 square feet of land, Mr. De Savary indicated that “it will comprise of 45 to 50 modern-day state-of-the-art suites with a touch of the past”. He pointed out that “upon completion, among the main attractions of the site would be glass elevators from the top of the mountain descending down to the sea. They would be supported by 22 penthouses – 11 on each side with a touch of the famous Amalfi course of Italy”.

According to the contractor Dr. La Touche, the project will start later this year and is expected to conclude within 12 months. During construction, extensive marketing of the Port Louis project is expected to garner interest from businesses desirous of purchasing luxury houses.

The announcement of the imminent start of this project has attracted favourable comments regarding the positive impact it will have on creating employment opportunities in Grenada.

Within recent years, the Grenada Board of Tourism has been placing major emphasis on the utilization of its destination website as a key component of its marketing strategy. Recognition of its success in this regard has now emerged through the announcement last Saturday January 21, 2012, that this official destination website (www.grenadagrenadines.com) was given the prestigious Caribbean Web Award for Best Tourist Board website.

This major award was announced on the eve of the 2012 Caribbean Marketplace Event at Atlantis in Nassau, Bahamas, where tourism practitioners and stakeholders had gathered for their annual conference. Grenada was selected based on its website’s use of modern technology, its user friendliness and the degree to which it highlighted the destination’s selling points. Other nominees in that category included the Nassau, Bahamas, Aruba and the US Virgin Islands.

Presenting the award to Grenada was Mr. Graham McKenzie of Travelmole, who thanked sponsors such as the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, the Lead Generators and Nassau, Paradise Island’s Tourist Board.

“Considering that we recently launched a new booking engine, I think that this is a double victory for the Board,” said Orlando Romain, E-Marketing Officer at the Grenada Board of Tourism. “This award is not only timely, but it indicates that we are heading in the right direction as we are about to conduct additional enhancements to the site.”

Other organizations that were awarded at the ceremony include Comfort Suites, Virgin Atlantic Airlines, Luxury Villa Rentals of McLaughlin Anderson, the Retreat at Lookout and UK Tour Operator I Explore.

Grenada Takes Best Advanced Diving and Best Wreck Diving in the Caribbean /Atlantic

Grenada was rated #1 in two of the most coveted categories in the 2012 Scuba Diving Magazine Awards – Best Advanced Diving and Best Wreck Diving in the Caribbean/Atlantic.
The destination is described as “a magnet for divers who prefer to explore sites that are high on the difficulty meter. When you combine unpredictable, muscular currents, fast moving reef drifts, blue-water descents and deep wrecks like the Hema I (90 feet), Shakem (100 feet) and the 600 foot former Italian luxury liner, Bianca C (165 feet), you’ve just mixed up the perfect recipe for advanced diving. To add to the excitement, take the 90-minute ferry ride from St. Georges to Carriacou, one of the three islands that comprise this country, and explore the fish-swarmed pinnacles and sunken vessels just offshore.”

“We are deeply gratified that our unique array of reefs, walls and ship wrecks has been recognized by the readers of Scuba Diving Magazine,” said Simon Stiell, Director of Tourism for Grenada. “With 50 dive sites on two islands to choose from, there is always something new and exhilarating to explore.”

For the Readers’ Choice Awards, thousands of Scuba Diving subscribers and web users rated their dive experiences on a scale of one to five. Results of the 2012 Awards are featured in the January/February 2012 issue of Scuba Diving magazine now on the newsstands.

Grenada, with its great drift and reef dives is perfect for divers of all levels. Whether above or below the water, Grenada’s tropical colours, pristine beaches, rainforests, wonderful food and its greatest treasure, the warm and welcoming people, will make your visit above and below the water a pleasure.
