VISITOR ARRIVALS THIRD QUARTER 2006 (Jan to Sep) 
Visitor arrivals to Grenada for the third quarter of the year amounted to 234,571, representing a decline of 11.52%. From this total, cruise passengers recorded a 60% share; stayover arrivals represented 39% and Same Day arrivals 1%. 

Stayover arrival performance continues to be strong in all the major source markets and for the period January - September 2006, a growth of 24.38% was realized with a total of 90,936 in comparison to 73,645 for the corresponding period in 2005. 

STAYOVER ARRIVALS
Markets Performance For the period January to September, 2006, United States arrivals accounted for 24% of total stayover arrivals and grew by 8.22% with a total of 21,554 compared to 19,916 for the same period 2005. Stayover arrivals from the US market stayed for average of 7.10 nights with 50% of arrivals visiting for leisure. 

The United Kingdom market recorded the highest growth rate in stayover arrivals - a growth of 68% with a total of 18,820 representing and a market share of 20.10% signaling the recovery of the long-haul market after a significant decline of 58% for the same period in 2005 compared to 2004. 

For the period under review, the Canadian market showed the second highest growth rate in arrivals, a 58.23% representing a total of 5,049 when compared to 3,191 for the same period in 2005. Stayover Arrivals from the Canadian market stayed for an average of 8.94 nights. 

Stayover arrivals from the Other Europe category grew by 9.86% moving from 5,049 in 2005 to 5,547 in 2006. France, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland registered increases of 23.82%, 22.16%, 27.08%, 49.00% respectively; however, Germany was the only country that recorded a decline - 11.69%. Overall, Europe had a market share of 26.02%.

The Caribbean market recorded a total of 24,484 which represented the largest share of total arrivals - 26.92%; and a growth of 15.96%. 

Arrivals from CARICOM islands registered a growth of 15.80% with a total of 23,419 which was driven mostly by arrivals from Trinidad & Tobago which increased by 23.57% (12,410); Barbados 15.41% (3,722); St. Vincent 36.03% (2,156). From total arrivals, CARICOM recorded a 25.75% market share. 

Arrivals from Latin America registered a total of 909, representing a significant increase of 25.55%. Arrivals from South America experienced a remarkable growth of 34.23% with a total of 800 compared to 596 for 2005. Central America recorded a decline of 14.84%. 

The average length of stay by stayover arrivals to Grenada was 7.57 nights. Germany recorded the longest stay with an average of 10.88 nights; followed by the United Kingdom 10 nights; Italy and France with an average of 9 nights; and Canada 8.94 nights. Stayover arrivals with shorter length of stay came from the US 7.10 nights; Caribbean 5.47 nights; and Latin America 5.76 nights. 

For the period January to September, 2006 stayover arrivals who visited for the purpose of leisure, recreation and holiday reached a total of 44,897, 49% of total arrivals. Business travel accounted for 16% (14,670) and 35% (31,399) represented other purposes such as visiting friends and relatives (VFR), study, convention, etc.. 

Air transportation represented 95% of total arrivals while transport over water accounted for 5%. For the period January to September, 2006 arrivals by air rose by 24.37% with a total of 86,750 compared to 69,753 in 2005, while arrivals utilizing transport over water increased by 7.58%. 

From total stayover arrivals, 40,687 stayed in paid accommodation - 69.44% or 28,255 stayed at hotels, while 25% or 10,180 utilised Apartment /Cottages, Villas and the remaining 5.56% or 2,252 stayed in Guest house

Cruise
The cruise sector which had been on the downturn since the beginning of the year saw this trend continued into the third quarter (January - September, 2006) with a decline of 24.37% (moving from 185,502 in 2005 to 140,287 in 2006). Similarly cruise calls declined by 12% representing a total of 154 compared to 175 for 2005. Despite the declines experienced in the cruise sector, Princess Cruises, one of the major lines, contributed a total of 56,141 passengers registering an increase of 47.91% over the number of passengers the cruise line brought to Grenada for the same period last year. 

Yachting
With an inactive hurricane season, the yachting sector registered an increase of 7.58% with a total of 4,187 arrivals compared to 3,892 for 2005. A total contrast to the behaviour of yachters one year ago when an active hurricane season was predicted where yachters sailed further south resulting in a decline of 25%. The European market recorded a total of 1,826, representing a 44% share of total yacht arrivals and an increase of 32.22% for the period January to September 2006. Other markets recording increases were Caribbean 37.79%; Latin America 38.89% and All Others 52.63%. The North American market, which was the second largest declined by 19.11% moving from 1,947 in 2005 to 1,575 in 2006.
